Friday With Dante

I love Dabito’s “Sunday With Beatrice” feature on his brilliant blog so much that I’ve decided to rip him off start my own version, Friday With Dante. Why not blog about him more than I already do, right? :)

This one came from the roll of Kodak Ektar film that I’ve been sharing this week. He’s in one of his two beds downstairs (he considers my bed upstairs to be his, so no need for one there). Such a rough life he has…

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Any fun plans? I’ll mostly be puttering around the house and checking things off my TeuxDeux list, since the next couple weekends will be pretty hectic. Speaking of which, I can’t believe the Humane Society Walk in San Diego is next weekend! Where has the time gone?

Adventures on Film :: Star Wars Exhibit

Previously I mentioned that my friend Jeff and I spent an afternoon geeking out at the Star Wars exhibit at the Discovery Science Center, and I was happy to relive that awesome feeling when I got my film scans back this week. Again, I have to say I’m so impressed with how the Kodak Ektar 100 film handled low light! Especially for this shot of an AT-AT model that must’ve been at least a foot tall:

Is it grainy? Sure, but it still looks damn good for how pitch dark it was in there. Here’s some more favorites – two different size models of the Millenium Falcon, Luke in his X-wing (complete with mini R2!), Yoda, and Padme’s kick ass fighting costume:

Jeff and I wandered the exhibit for over an hour, trying not to completely freak out over the idea that we were looking at actual costumes, props and models from the films. And we were also trying not to trample any kids. They were everywhere, but I just loved seeing the next generation of fanboys and fangirls get educated! :)

Love the grain, great shots. Kris would love this exhibit, but I wouldn’t… might have to take him anyway.

I LOVE the grain! And the lighting, and the depth! More film! More film! :)

Adventures on Film :: LA’s Natural History Museum

Back in February, the girls and I spent a day up in LA, and I left my dSLR behind in favor of my dad’s old Nikon FM with a fresh roll of Kodak Ektar 100 film, which I hadn’t tried before. With it only being 100 speed, I knew I was pushing it in the darker areas of the museum, and I thought for sure half the roll would turn out blurry and dark (most of the interior shots were taken at about f/2, 1/30). But when I finally finished the roll and got it developed, I was in love with the results!

For this day trip we started out with brunch at Luca on Sunset, which was seriously delicious, and I hope to get there again next time I’m in the area. We stopped by Necromance to see their amazing taxidermy (albino peacock!) and browse their curiosities, but there was no photos allowed, dangit. Then we headed over to the main event for the day, the Natural History Museum. I don’t remember ever going there, although my parents assured me I did when I was little.

At any rate, I just loved the building itself, and their new dinosaur installation is incredible. So much to do! But I love that they still kept their old school dioramas and other displays. Even the new entrance with it’s vertical rock wall (behind Katie below) was awesome.

Don’t you just love that quote? As the museum was starting to close, we headed over to Nikki and Katie’s favorite bar in LA, Tiki Ti. It’s tiny, cash only, their drinks pack a hell of a punch, and the atmosphere is amazing. I loved it – highly recommended as a cap to a fantastic day! :)

Also, here’s my Instagrams from that day. The last one on the bottom right is the inside of Tiki Ti – all string lights, crazy license plates and bottles of booze.

Have always wanted to go there, really think it would also make a great location for an e-session. ;) Love seeing all your film stuff.

Proud Mama

Ellingsen Photography Dante at the Pet Expo

I’m having a huge “proud mama” moment right now, after seeing Dante meet and greet with about, oh, two hundred people or so at the Pet Expo that we worked yesterday. I’ve taken him to parties and charity walks and other such gatherings with lots of people, but never this kind of setting where everyone came to us and we had to be social the entire time. As we made our way to the IGCA booth (in one of the giant buildings at the fairgrounds with a ton of other exhibitors and rescue organizations) he was a bit freaked out by the crowds and really clung to me when I picked him up to keep him from getting trampled. But once we got to our booth, where he could be off leash and play with the other Italian Greyhounds, he was back to his normal social self.

They had a little low fence between our table and the next so that people could easily come up and see the dogs, and Dante was right there, with his tail wagging, nearly the entire time. Everyone that came by was so sweet and just loved petting him and getting kisses. The only weird moment for me was when one woman picked him up while my head was turned, before I could stop her! Hey lady, if it’s not acceptable to go around picking up stranger’s children…

At any rate, it was wonderful to be able to chat with other IG parents and see Dante play, and to help the organization spread awareness about the breed. I wound up talking to a lot of young couples and families, and I hope I helped them decide on their future pet! The Expo was insanely packed, which is great, but it also meant I just barely had time to snap the photo on the left with my phone, and that was about it.

Dante was asleep by the time I pulled out of the parking lot (see the photo above), and my cheeks hurt from smiling, but I think we both went to bed feeling pretty great. Looking forward to next year!

xoxo

That’s wonderful! Congratulations to you and Dante for your success at the expo. That is no easy environment for a dog. In fact, when we attend the doggie expo in our city we choose to leave our dog at home as it is just too much for her. Anytime she comes along we spend more time keeping her happy than looking at all the fun things the event has to offer. Dante’s ability to relax in such a crazy space is no small thing!

Have A Sunny Weekend!

This is officially my new favorite photo of Dante, taken at our neighborhood park:

Just when I thought I couldn’t love my 50mm lens any more… :)

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend! Mine is all about the pets. I’ll be at the shelter tomorrow catching up on photos of adoptables, and then Sunday afternoon Dante and I will be working the IGCA booth at the America’s Family Pet Expo. Come by and say hi if you’re there!

Also, just as an aside – isn’t it crazy how much my brother looks like my grandpa (mom’s dad)?

My other brother is the spitting image of my dad so it’s funny how they each took after different sides of the family.

We’ve had nothing but rain for four days straight so I am envious of your sunshine! I hope your weekend was positively memorable!
