With the start of the New Year, my mom and I have been putting our words into actions when it comes to walking and hiking more. (Note to self: get new shoes.) One place we keep going back to is Carbon Canyon Park, but we start on the opposite side from the entrance where the dam is located. There’s really great paved trails that go up and over the dam and down into the park.
I should probably explain that the word dam is kind of deceiving – there’s no lake behind it, it’s more of an emergency basin in case of flooding. And right now, with the dry winter we’ve been having (up until this past week), it’s all very brown and dried out.
But I have to say the views are gorgeous, and going late in the afternoon made this photographer very very happy (you just can’t beat the golden light). I had my new Handy Dandy Hand Strap on, which was great because that way camera just stayed attached to my right hand and Dante’s leash was in my left.
We wandered through the park (there’s a lovely lake and quite a few playground / BBQ areas) and then back to the dam through the wilderness-y part of the basin area.
I’m lucky that my mom and Sarah are so patient with me when I want to pause and get silhouette and vista shots.![]()
There is always new construction somewhere in the county. Because we don’t have enough people crammed in here.
And besides feeling great, the next best part is how exhausted the dogs all are that night!
(Anja says: ppplllbbbtttt!)
What’s your favorite local place to explore? I’ve got a whole list of dog-friendly places nearby that we’ll be trying out in the coming weeks.

Stunning photos, Trude. I particularly love the B/W of the tree. Am I the only person in the world who’s dogs haven’t been taught to stay? It’s on my bucket list! We don’t do much exploring as Frankie is such a puller on leash it spoils the fun for me. He’d rather go off at his own pace (flat out) and just keep checking back to make sure he knows where Beryl and I are.
