Happy Syttende Mai!

I can’t believe it’s already time again for Norway’s National Day! Syttende Mai = 17th of May in Norwegian, and you can read all about the history of it here if you want. :)

(Taken with my Nikon FM and 50mm lens on Kodak Portra 100 film.)

I know I’ve been talking a lot about how much I miss Norway, so I’ll shut up about it now and just say that I’ve been happily watching the photos from today pop up on the local Norwegian paper’s website, and the photos my family there have been sharing on Facebook.

And just to be mean, I’ll share this saliva-inducing photo with you, taken the last time I was there:

A Little Tribute to Mama

I know I’ve shared many times how much of a role model and BFF my mom is to me, but of course today I think it bears repeating.

Ellingsen Photography Me and Mama August 2011

Mama, I only hope I can do half as much for my future children as you’ve done for me. The more I learn about this world we live in, the more grateful I am for the unconditional love and support I’ve always had from you (and dad!), and the knowledge that you will always unquestionably be there is more valuable than anything.

You’re my biggest cheerleader, my staunchest critic and, now, the voice of my inner conscience. I’m really not sure when that happened, and I’m not sure how much I like it, but damn it if it doesn’t work like a charm.

And lest this post get to sickly-sweet: yes, we still fight occasionally, but I love that now it typically ends with us laughing at our bitchiness together. It’s bound to happen, with us being practically carbon copies. (Poor dad.) I couldn’t have asked for a better mother-daughter relationship, I really couldn’t.

I love you. Happy Mother’s Day.

Proud Mama

Ellingsen Photography Dante at the Pet Expo

I’m having a huge “proud mama” moment right now, after seeing Dante meet and greet with about, oh, two hundred people or so at the Pet Expo that we worked yesterday. I’ve taken him to parties and charity walks and other such gatherings with lots of people, but never this kind of setting where everyone came to us and we had to be social the entire time. As we made our way to the IGCA booth (in one of the giant buildings at the fairgrounds with a ton of other exhibitors and rescue organizations) he was a bit freaked out by the crowds and really clung to me when I picked him up to keep him from getting trampled. But once we got to our booth, where he could be off leash and play with the other Italian Greyhounds, he was back to his normal social self.

They had a little low fence between our table and the next so that people could easily come up and see the dogs, and Dante was right there, with his tail wagging, nearly the entire time. Everyone that came by was so sweet and just loved petting him and getting kisses. The only weird moment for me was when one woman picked him up while my head was turned, before I could stop her! Hey lady, if it’s not acceptable to go around picking up stranger’s children…

At any rate, it was wonderful to be able to chat with other IG parents and see Dante play, and to help the organization spread awareness about the breed. I wound up talking to a lot of young couples and families, and I hope I helped them decide on their future pet! The Expo was insanely packed, which is great, but it also meant I just barely had time to snap the photo on the left with my phone, and that was about it.

Dante was asleep by the time I pulled out of the parking lot (see the photo above), and my cheeks hurt from smiling, but I think we both went to bed feeling pretty great. Looking forward to next year!

Easter Details

My family had a lovely Easter gathering this year, and there were such pretty decorations for the table I just had to share. This is about the only time of year I’ll accept pastel colors (baby showers notwithstanding).

My mom made this sweet centerpiece from roses out of the garden (my dad’s pride and joy) and flowers from the snail vine:

After seeing this lovely tutorial for watercolor egg name settings (or place eggs, for lack of a better title), I decided to jimmy some for our table. Just minus the watercoloring, and we substituted custard cups with Easter basket grass since that’s what we had on hand. I wrote the names, and then my cousin Jenny came to the rescue with her awesome art skills and free handed different illustrations for each person’s egg. I am in awe of her work – done only with markers!

No shots of the food, because once the food was on the table you couldn’t keep back the vultures, but we served salmon (baked in foil with brown sugar, lemon slices and a bit of peri-peri spice), roasted asparagus, mashed potatoes, beets, fresh rolls and salad. No ham this year, because it’s a major migraine trigger for my mom and I, as much as we hate to admit it.

Between dinner and the artichoke dip we all snacked on beforehand, no one had room for dessert! Poor mom got stuck with a whole angel food cake and boozey fruit. But I suppose if that’s the worst thing that happened, we’re doing okay. ;)

Happy Weekend!

It’s Friday! Woohoo! Anybody else feel like this week dragged ass? No? Okay, well, fine. I’ll still wish you a wonderful weekend. I’m off to lecture Dante that this is not the way to get mama’s attention (even though it really works, the smart bugger).

Here’s some useful / entertaining links I stumbled across this week:

Also, for some reason this keeps cracking me up, no matter how many times I look at it (from We Know Memes):

Hope your weekend is lovely!
