Etsy Loves :: Fresh Start

The fresh feeling of a new year hasn’t gone away yet. Maybe that’s because I’ve been crossing lots of to-dos off my list, and doing more of the things I promised myself I would? Either way, I’m on the hunt for things that will help keep this renewed and happy feeling going strong for months to come. A bit materialistic? Sure. But you can’t ignore the fact that lovely surroundings help foster good vibes! And there’s nothing wrong with rewarding myself for committing to a long hike once a week, right?:)

Gettin’ More Sh*t Done

Hiking Around More

Feeling Pretty More

Playing Around with Photography More

So how’s your new year going for you? Anything you’re planning on doing more of?

xoxo

Happy Friday!

Mmm pumpkin pie…I can’t wait for Thanksgiving! This year my parents are hosting quite a few friends and family members, and I’m really looking forward to it. I’m sure I’ll be making Pioneer Woman’s Whiskey Glazed Carrots and Butternut Squash Puree…again. They’re so good, I’ll take any excuse to make them. It’s like you get dessert during dinner!:)

It’s a gloomy and chilly Friday around here, so here’s a few good links for those of you trying to hibernate like me.

  • My shutter sister Nancy shared her pumpkin soup recipe this week. Go get you some! I can personally vouch for how delicious it is.:)
  • My future child is totally having a Star Wars nursery like this one, no question.
  • Some fantastic ideas for eco-friendly and inexpensive/free shipping materials over at the Etsy blog.
  • I totally want to try making these apple cider donuts. Doesn’t Jacqueline’s photography make you drool? Love her work!
  • Kaylah over at the Dainty Squid did a fantastic blog about Estate Sales 101. So helpful for a novice like me!
  • If you’re looking for a great gift for any owl-loving friends, you can create a super cute custom owl art calendar for free at My Owl Barn! (Found via How About Orange.)
  • And speaking of gifts, I’ve been pinning different free printable holiday gift tags like crazy. My favorite so far are these from Blush Printables, these from Giverslog and these from Domestifluff. Or I might just do big initials right on the wrapping paper with washi tape, haven’t decided yet.
  • Also, Ez at Creature Comforts has put out her 2nd annual issue of Gifted magazine! It’s so lovely and chock full of inspiration.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend! I’m planning on some quality time with my mom and a puppy play date, mixed in with some errands and computer work.

xoxo

Macro Dante

I was so excited when my parents gave me the macro lens filters that I was admiring for my birthday, so of course I took them out for a spin as soon as I had a chance. Therefore, please excuse the super low light – I shot these earlier this week before bed, when Dante was all sleepy and trying to go burrow under the covers instead of pose.:)

Full disclosure for my fellow photographers: these are two of about four that I liked out of the roughly 35 shots I took! It’s super difficult to manually focus when you’re shooting at f/1.4 and your eyes are terrible. But it definitely makes it a bigger victory when you get a shot you love! I processed these with one of my favorite B&W action sets, Matchstick by My Four Hens.

Also, the light in my bedroom in the late afternoon is perfect. My ever-ready model agrees.

Happy weekend everybody! Hope you have a great one!

xoxo

For Each Other

Last night was the monthly meeting of a photography group I participate in called Fast Track Photographers. These groups were started by a super awesome guy, Dane Sanders, who wrote a book called Fast Track Photographer that really revolutionized the photography industry. Basically, along with challenging the “old guard”, he also wrote a lot about the idea of photographers helping each other instead of competing, which is why the groups are also called FEOs, or “For Each Other”.:)

Naturally, I love this philosophy, and so do a lot of other photographers, as it turns out. My girlfriend Nancy brought me to a meeting in January and I’ve been to almost every one since! In fact a few months ago Dane came and spoke to us himself, which was so nice of him and incredibly inspiring. We also had the Youngrens come and do a fantastic presentation.

This month we did a headshot night so people could trade headshots of each other. I actually brought my dad’s old film camera to challenge myself and really play, and I can’t wait to get the roll developed! We had so much fun shooting and playing with off-camera flash and then settled in for s’mores in Jen’s fabulous backyard.

So if you’re in the industry, or even just thinking about getting started and want to learn more, these groups are made up of the friendliest people and the meetings are totally free! There’s nothing like talking shop with someone who knows exactly what you mean.:)If you’re in the SoCal area you can find out more about our group here, and if you’re not you can easily find one in your area.

I really hope you’ll join us, and happy Friday everybody!

xo
