SBACC Adoptables :: April

It was a bit of hazy morning when Sarah and I worked with this sweet group of pups, but the sun came out eventually to grace us with its presence. What a rough life it is, being near the beach in Southern California.

Stay tuned because at the bottom of this post I’m sharing two awesome promotions that are going on at the shelter in May! And yes, I know, it’s no longer April anymore, but that’s when I shot these photos and since it’s my blog, I get to decide what month it is. :)

{Click any photo to go to the shelter’s page about that dog!}

First up is sweet little Beth, a rat terrier who would definitely be the queen bee of any home, in the best way possible. And she’s a great cuddler!

And then there’s Fabio. Who lives up to his name in every way – he’s such a great model! He was so funny, acting like a dog half his size and trying to cuddle with Sarah.

Miss Fiona came to the shelter with bad eye and skin infections, and now you can hardly tell there was ever a problem! And what a sweetheart temperament she has – just look at that smile! (Maybe it’s just my generation, but every time I see the name Fiona I automatically think of Shrek. Anyone else?) She qualifies for the Back in Black special going on this month – more on that below.

Simon and Lacey are the cutest little pair. They were found together and are so bonded, the shelter wants to make sure they find a home together. Shouldn’t be too hard, seeing as they both fit in one lap, right? ;)

So there we have it, the newbies for April! Quite a few we worked with that day have already found homes, which always makes me feel awesome (the goal here is to not be needed, y’know?). But what I did notice is that there are several that we’ve photographed in the past who are still waiting to find just the right family. Luckily the shelter is currently running two promotions this month! First, Back in Black, which is actually a nationwide event sponsored by the Best Friends Society – No More Homeless Pets network, which the SBACC is a part of. They feature black-furred animals because they can often be overlooked or hard to get a good photo of, so for the month of May adoption fees are reduced to $35 for cats and $75 for dogs.

This would mean that Fiona and Lacey would qualify, as well as pups you might remember like Mr. E and Olive.

And Olive would also qualify for the other promotion running this month, Super Senior May!

So if you’ve been waiting to find a new family member, now is the time, friends! You really can’t beat those adoptions fees, and you can also feel great about going to the SBACC knowing that they’re a pro-life shelter – I know I do!

xoxo

SBACC Adoptables :: March

It was a perfect balmy afternoon when Sarah and I made a trip to the shelter earlier this month, and when you combine that with some awesome happy dogs, made for a perfect way to spend a couple hours.

{Click any image to learn more about that dog!}

First to the plate is Buddy, a terripoo. This sweet lap sitter came in to the shelter with his fur pretty knotted up, but he looks so much better now, don’t you think?

Butler here reminds me so much of a gray version of Jim from Mike and Molly, it’s uncanny! Anyone else watch that show? Anyway, Butler has a similar calm personality, and laid right out for belly rubs when he was in Sarah’s lap. :)

Jackie is far and away one of the sweetest German Shepherds I’ve ever met. She let us snuggle and hug her as much as we liked, and Sarah and I really didn’t want to leave her! Jackie would be especially perfect for a family with kids or maybe a veteran.

Miss Lola here may get the song in your head (apologies), but she’ll make up for it with her sweetness. She’s a bit roly-poly right now, but loves to walk and just needs a home where her humans will exercise and feed her properly!

Louie may look like a pint-sized rottweiler, but he’s actually a min pin / doxie mix. Such a handsome devil! And great with people too.

Ellingsen Photography Orange County SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Louie

Mr. E is a chi mix who’s still getting used to regular attention. And you know I’m a sucker for big batwing ears!

Ellingsen Photography Orange County SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Mr E

Muttley (I just love that name!) is a shepherd / shar pei mix who’s surprisingly calm for being only seven months old. His cute little fold-over ears and that super soft fur had me petting him in between shots.

Olive is the matriarch of this group at eight years old, but I would have never have guessed it! Unlike my dog, she’s got hardly any grey at all. Lucky girl! ;)

Peepers and Kane are a bonded pair that are just too cute together. These little ones have been through a lot but I know they’ll give back just as much love to whomever takes them home.

Oh, Skippy, you and your underbite crack me up! This charming Cairn Terrier has overcome the infection that he arrived with and is doing much better.

Ellingsen Photography Orange County SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Skippy

And now we’ve made it through the alphabet to Winston. This beagle is an older gentleman but very distinguished by his age…except when I catch him in the act of flipping his ear. Too cute, right?

Hopefully you’ll take a moment and share a link if you know anyone looking to add to their family!

SBACC Adoptables :: February

While Sarah and I were hard at work at the shelter last weekend, we had the pleasure of seeing not one, but two dogs from the shelter go home with their new families! (Eddie and Jake, from our last trip.) Needless to say we were working with even bigger smiles than usual. :)

{Click any image to learn more about adopting that dog!}

Speaking of bigger than usual, mister Brewser here is a Saint Bernard mix who has lots of puppy energy but was also great at mugging for the camera.

Ellingsen Photography SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Brewser

And then there’s Diesel. Whose eyes are like those spiral hypnotic joke glasses – because honestly, I couldn’t stop looking at him! If you’re looking for a Husky, don’t wait to go see him because with his calm demeanor he won’t be at the shelter much longer!

Ellingsen Photography SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Diesel

Is it wrong that I just want to bury my face in his fur? I don’t even care how much it would make me sneeze.

Pretty shepherd mix Jasmine was a bit shy with us at first, but she warmed up to Sarah pretty quickly and it turns out she thinks she’s a lap dog. Which I’m all for, no matter what size they are!

Speaking of dogs who think they fit in your lap, meet Jackson. He’s super friendly and playful, and good with cats too!

Ellingsen Photography SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Jackson 2

Jessie is kind of the matriarch of the bunch at nine years old, and Sarah and I just loved how calm and gentle she was with us – I can easily picture her adopting the kids of any family as her own and tolerating all sorts of toddler abuse. (Like Linus the Boxer and his family.)

Ellingsen Photography SBACC Adoptable Dogs-Jessie

I just love seeing dogs that have that two-tone caramel coloring, so I was a very happy girl working with sweet Lizzie, a Manchester terrier. You’d never know she came in with a case of mange – she’s recovered beautifully!

London is a super cute Fox Terrier mix, and still a puppy. But I have my fingers crossed that those ears keep growing with her!

London’s roomie is Roscoe, who, in case you were wondering, is proof that Doxie + Corgi = adorable. He’s only ten months and such a sweetie! Also: floppy ears.

And then we have Thelma and Louise. These two are too bonded to be adopted separately, but who would want to split up a pair like this? Quick – somebody find a pint-size convertible for them to ride around in!

Until next time…

IGCA Rescue :: Bennie

Before I tell you all about the cuteness that is Bennie, here’s a little story about the Italian Greyhound Club of America Rescue organization…

Way back in ancient times (circa 2008), my ex and I started the search for another Italian Greyhound. We knew we didn’t want to go to any pet stores (for these reasons) and getting one from a breeder is insanely expensive and pretty much pointless if you’re not going to show the dog. So after a little Googling, we found the IGCA has a fantastic rescue program that fosters the rescues in actual homes until they can be placed with a new family. The local area rep even comes to meet with you in person and make sure your home will be okay. Italian Greyhounds (or Iggies) aren’t your average pup in many ways, so I love that there’s an organization that helps facilitate proper adoptions of this awesome breed.

At any rate, at the time they didn’t have an Iggy that met our particular needs, and we wound up finding Dante soon after at the SBACC, thanks to a tip from a friend who volunteered there. Although we didn’t wind up going through them, the IGCA has always been at the back of my mind. I started my photography volunteering with the SBACC, and now that I’m in the groove with them it occurred to me that I might reach out to the local IGCA rep about doing the same for them.

So all that led to me taking a little road trip down to south Orange County earlier this month to spend some time with Bennie, a super affectionate little two-year-old. The IGCA saved him from a local shelter, and his foster mama was proud to report how much better he looks than when they first got him. He’s super playful (I’d forgotten how energetic they can be at that age!) but in typical greyhound fashion takes lots of naps too.

I love when dogs have color patches around their eyes, don’t you?

Bennie isn’t up on the website yet, so if you’re interested you can contact Roxann, the local rep, at ub11214@yahoo.com. To see more pups available in California, click here.

I can’t say enough about how excited I am to get to work with more Iggies this year. It was so weird, seeing all these oddly-colored Dantes running around!;)

SBACC Adoptables :: Luke & Leah

These two sweethearts were adopted together and then unfortunately returned this week, so I’d thought I’d share the cuteness that is Luke and Leah! (Spelled differently, but still pronounced like Princess Leia.):)They had a litter together and make wonderful roomies.

Sweet Leah is a cuddly puggle, with the prettiest brown-red fur. I have a feeling those eyes are going to make it hard to say No.

And young padawan Luke (sorry, the fangirl in me couldn’t help herself) is a year-old terrier mix that reminds me of a movie dog, I just can’t think of which one…

And yes, in case you’re wondering, he asked to be disguised as a leopard.

Hopefully you’ll pass on the info if you know of anyone looking for a lap-sized pup to add to their family!:)

xoxo
