10 Things

This is the 10th edition of 10 Things since I started this little corner of the internet! Woot! That’s 100 things I’m grateful for/are making me happy. I feel pretty good knowing I’ve stopped to take stock at least that many times in the last year(ish).

1. Adorable Laura George greeting cards. I’ve been admiring her work for ages on Etsy, and with several birthdays coming up, plus various days celebrating parents, I went ahead and ordered a set all at once. Don’t you just love the colorful envelopes?

2. Lake walks. I know I’ve said it too many times before, but they’re just so damn good for me – for my senses, soul and thighs. I’ve hoodwinked a few friends and family members to join me and that just makes it even better.

3. The new Nerdist and Geek and Sundry YouTube channels. Their wonderfully geeky original content is what finally convinced me to join the 21st century and actually subscribe to a channel. Felicia Day is my hero, I’m so happy she has a regular video blog (The Flog) now! Both channels launched this week – nerdgasm!

4. A new Star Wars moleskine. Speaking of nerdy…but I got it on sale! It’s truly the perfect size to take everywhere.

5. A new haircut. There’s nothing like the feeling of freshly coiffed hair, amiright? (I used an app called Photo Collage to combine the before and after.) I am devastated that my genius stylist is moving in August after she gets married. So happy for her, but I’m still selfishly sad!

6.  The resurgence of the annual Family Easter gathering. We’re not particularly church-y, but we do love a reason to get all the cousins together (when I say “all”, I really mean my three cousins and my uncle and aunt). And we’re especially overdue because the last year we really did anything was back in 2009. Crazy how time flies! Tangent: I couldn’t remember the last time we went all out for Easter; luckily I’ve been blogging and taking photos regularly for so long I was able to look back and see! It’s one of the main reasons I’ll never stop – the historian in me loves to document.

Anyway, even though my dad is still in Norway, my mom and I decided to go ahead and gather everyone anyway. So I whipped up a lovely email invite from Paperless Post (gorgeous designs, half of which are free!) and mom and I menu planned. Can’t wait!

7. Actually completing a project. Like cutting up old desktop calendars to string up underneath my bedroom window. Pretty cute, right?

8. Cooking, for realsies. I’m pretty honest about not being, shall we say, anyone’s choice if they’re facing an Iron Chef-style challenge. But this year I’ve finally found myself actually wanting to cook meals at home on a regular basis, and not just whipping up chicken salad melts and calling it a day (even though they’re delicious). And it’s not that I suck at cooking, I’m just terrible at improvising or looking at ingredients and coming up with something. I do much better with a recipe to follow and all the ingredients at hand. But I suppose some of that comes with experience, right? Sure. {Please share your easiest go-to recipes with me!}

So, for example, this week I made Pioneer Woman’s pasta with tomato cream sauce and Kate Miss’ recipe for cauliflower and leek soup (with a few modifications – half beef broth, half chicken broth in place of stock, and I used green onions instead of leeks). This was my second time making the soup and I have to say that recipe is get-outta-town good. And with no milk products (except butter)! Plus you get to use an immersion blender – awesome! I was so hungry by the time it was ready I didn’t even stop for a photo.

9. Photo-a-day challenges. This time, it’s via Instagram! And it’s only a month-long challenge, so you don’t feel the same pressure as with something like Project 365. Plus they make it interesting by having a different theme for each day! I’ll share my images all together at the end of the month. If you want to join in, I found the themes listed here.

10. Discovering new inspiration. This week I completely fell in love with the work of Canadian photographer Benoit Paillé, especially his portraits of attendees of the Rainbow Gathering. The honesty and beauty of his work took my breath away. Big thanks to my peeps at Faded + Blurred for blogging about him!

Hope you guys have a wonderful weekend!

xoxo

10 Things

The weather here is starting to feel like spring, and I’m trying to ignore the fact that we’re two months into the year and focus on a renewed sense of self. What is it about joining a new online dating site that makes you reevaluate your whole life while trying to fill in those “about me” boxes? At any rate, here’s what’s been making me happy / thankful lately…

1. Walks around the lake. My neighbors told me about a shortcut that we can take to avoid the busy street that Dante isn’t such a fan of, and now we’ve been walking there and back almost every day. There’s always lots of people fishing and walking their dogs, and Dante loves lunging at watching all the birds.

2. Celebrating Star Wars. My friend Jeff and I spent a day earlier this month exploring the Star Wars exhibit at the Discovery Science Center and watching The Phantom Menace in 3D. It was really a pretty perfect geek-out day. The exhibit is not cheap but so worth it – they had ship models, costumes, Yoda, AT-ATs, and a bunch of fun hands-on things for kids to do. And speaking of the Wars, I think this R2 shirt will be my next geeky purchase!

3. The Oscars. We’ll be having some friends over to watch again this year, and I’m hoping I’ll finally beat Nikki at guessing the most winners! (But don’t bet on me.) We’ll be using these ballots from How About Orange (and probably playing her Oscar bingo game too). I love watching them so much more now that we have a DVR.;)

4. Snuggling with Dante. It just doesn’t get old. Somehow it never fails to be comforting, especially now when the nights are still chilly. In the summer, I don’t want his blazing hot little body anywhere near me!

5. My old, beat up, trusty Converse. I’m wearing them right now, in fact. You just can’t go wrong.

6. These brilliant words. I first saw this Twain quote on Pinterest, but decided to play with it over one of my photos and put it up on the fridge as a reminder. I think maybe we all have several points in our life where we find out why, don’t you think? That there isn’t only one?

7. Cozying up at my desk with a drink and some photo processing. Sometimes it’s kind of like running – it can be tough to put on your shoes and get out the door, but once you’re going you feel awesome about it.

8. Creatively funny things. Like this Tumblr I just discovered called T-Rex Trying… by Hugh Murphy. It’s hard not to giggle at every one!

9. Shooting more film. I’m halfway through a roll of Kodak Ektar 100 and can’t wait to see the results!

10. Easy plant DIYs. I’m such a plant killer, but I’d really like more greenery indoors and I think even I can handle something like a terrarium! This article at Refinery 29 makes it look so easy.

Hope you all have a wonderful weekend, and don’t forget to enter the giveaway!

10 Things

Well that was a nice break! Hope you guys all had a lovely holiday too, whatever you celebrate. Right now I’m having trouble believing that it’s been almost two months since I sat down and took stock of what’s making me happy lately. Not that I haven’t shared what I’m grateful for, but 10 Things tends to be a more lighthearted version of that. I also can’t believe that pretty soon I’ll be using lots of white out when dating things, because I’m terrible at remembering to write the new year!

So here’s what’s bringing a smile to my face these days. Hope you’ll take a moment and share in the comments what’s doing it for you!:)

1. Hot chocolate. Preferably with mini marshmallows. Nikki and I have been making mugs (of the instant kind) regularly, especially with how cold the nights have been lately. I plan on trying this amazing-looking recipe for Crockpot Hot Chocolate that I found via Pinterest soon!

2. Dollhouse. The latest TV series that I obsessively watched on Netflix. I wasn’t sure at first, but soon every episode surprised me with something I didn’t expect, and I love that. Plus the exploration of what is intrinsic to a person, what can and can’t be determined by the brain, is fascinating – even if it is for TV. Plus Eliza Dushku’s range is really impressive, and I’ve formed a teensy/giant crush on the Topher character, played by the adorable Fran Kranz. (Image source here.)

Any recommendations of what to try now that I’ve finished it? Other fave series I’ve discovered this year include Downton Abbey, Warehouse 13 (you really have to start at the beginning to get hooked), The League and The IT Crowd.

3. Second shooting a wedding with my shutter sister Nancy. Her hubby, normally her second shooter, had a last-minute hiccup so I filled in earlier this month. It was so much fun! I’ll share some of the images from that day as soon as I can. (And see below for a photo of her being hilariously cute.)

4. This quote on photography, found here on the Inspiration Notebook blog. It’s just so…perfect.

5. SNICKERDOODLE MUFFINS. Need I say more? I want to hug whoever thought of this first! The recipe can be found here, and the photo below is by Maria from the Tasty Kitchen blog. I’m thinking these might just be the perfect thing for New Years’ Day.

6. Designing Christmas cards. I did mine and helped my mom with theirs, and they turned out so cute! I used ProDPI to print and was thrilled with the results. This year I ponied up and purchased this adorable set by Jessica Rose at Volume 25. I just love her work! (It’s blank below so that I had room to sign each one personally.)

7. Friends’ Christmas. Nikki and I hosted several of our closest friends last Friday night in order to eat, drink and share gifts. We had the best time! Thanks to Mindy for introducing us to Wits and Wagers, a super fun betting/guessing game.

8. Decorating the mantel. I’ve never had a real fireplace mantel before, so this was extra fun! I put mini red and gold ornaments I got at Target years ago in the hurricane jars and the string of lights (also from Target) was just the right length to go across and back. The fake tall white candles were a gift from friends. They even flicker, have a timer setting so they turn themselves off, and smell like vanilla! Oh, technology, I love you. (Sorry for the terrible iPhone shot, somehow I can’t seem to find the time to take proper photos!)

9. Giving back. I participated in a Help Portrait event again this year, and it was amazing. So many inspiring women! And it was so cute to see these big bad Marines going all googly over the little kids.:)Plus, this group of people who always participate is so wonderful. You can read a lovely writeup about the event here. (And yes, I wear that striped shirt all. the. time.)

10. The return of Santa(s). It’s become an annual tradition for my dad and uncle to wear Santa hats while handing out gifts on Christmas Eve. Aren’t they adorable?:)

I can’t believe it’s already all over! I’m a little sad and yet much more relaxed.;)Do you guys have any fun plans for New Years Eve?

10 Things

It’s all about fall around here! This is truly my favorite time of year, I feel so rejuvenated compared to August and September! So naturally the things making me happy right now pretty much fall into that “autumn” category.:)(Heh, no pun intended, honest.)

1. The Ember candle from Pier 1. As soon as I smelled this candle, I knew I had to have it. I might even go back and stock up on a few more, that’s how much I love the scent. It’s the perfect fall blend! A lot of smells irritate me (especially when I have a migraine), so when I find one I like I have to pounce. I’ve had it burning almost every night!

2. Vampire pumpkins. Rawr! You guys, I actually made something I saw on Pinterest! I found these via my friend Melissa on Pinterest. The original tutorial is from Martha Stewart. Super easy and oh so cute! We just substituted glittery circle stickers from the scrapbooking aisle for red map tacks. (This one pictured is Mindy’s…mine didn’t turn out half as cute.)

3. My new macro lens filters. As you might have seen on Friday, they’re just so much fun to play with!

4. Gettin’ crafty. Mindy has been helping me (in fact, that was her birthday present for me – stocking up on supplies for a couple projects) and it’s been so fun! If you had told me a year ago that I would have been doing stuff like this I would have laughed in your face. But now I love it. Witness: my completed felt leaf garland, made with help from Mindy and from this tutorial and template by Jessica Peck, and inspired by Elsie’s super cute version from 2008.

In retrospect, I should’ve done smaller stitches, but you live and you learn, right? Next project is a yarn wreath kinda like this one from Decor Chick!

5. Jamba Juice gift cards from friends. Because it allows me to feed my White Gummi Bear addiction. (Thanks, Dale!)

6. These Celine platforms, as photographed by Garance Dore.

Be still my heart! A girl can dream, right?

7. This quote. Can I get an AMEN?!

The print is by Tracie Andrews and available for just $15 for an 8×10!

8. This photo of Nancy and I at the Design*Sponge book signing a few weeks ago. With both of us being photogs we rarely get photos together, so this one is a keeper! You can just barely see where we signed the chalkboard in the top right corner.

So thankful they had Rachel Thurston there doing the photos (who was super sweet!) and Bash, Please did the backdrop.

9. This article on Felicia Day in Paste Magazine. Everyone agrees she’s a geek girl hero, but I think she should be considered a role model for women everywhere. I’ve seen her interviewed live too (for the Nerdist podcast) and the woman is just so darn well spoken and driven. She’s really made it in a man’s world, on her own terms, and I’m so inspired every time she opens her mouth – or posts to her blog.

10. Finally hanging some things on the wall. Big thanks to my mama for coming over last night and helping us! +5 bonus points for making screw and hammer innuendo jokes all night.

So what’s floating your boat lately, friends? Share!

xoxo

10 Things

The weather is finally cooler, fall is almost here and my birthday is less than a month away. There’s a lot to love right now!

1. Australian red liquorice. Can’t get enough. The kind from Trader Joe’s is the best! Mmm sugar high.

2. The return of fall TV. Top Model started this week, plus Community and Big Bang Theory next week. Can’t wait! I’ll also be watching recording Bones, Castle, HIMYM and the new Zooey Deschanel show. What are your favorite fall shows?

3. Finding out where the good light is at different times of day in the new place. Wooo second floor windows!

4. Star Wars marathons on TV. It really doesn’t matter how many times I’ve seen them – I can’t help myself!

5. Reading eBooks on my iPhone. I never thought I’d convert, but I downloaded the latest Parasol Protectorate book, Heartless, in less time than it took to set up my credit card info. Color me impressed. Yes, the screen is pretty small for lengthy reading, but if I’m out at lunch alone or something it’s awesome to have that with me – and not be reliant on internet/network access.

6. Having family that’s so photogenic. Maybe I’m biased but they’re awesome. I think this photo is going on the wall.:)

7. Watching True Blood with Nikki. This week, while watching the season finale, we were both screaming “WTF!!” in unison every five minutes! Who do you love most? I’m Team Lafayette all the way. (Is that even an option?)

8. The Guild. Speaking of TV, you should really check out the best web series EVAH. It’s made even better by the fact that it’s written, produced, and stars Felicia Day, who basically started making it because she wanted to (and paid for it herself), and now it’s exploded everywhere. She’s kind of my role model. This season has been killer, and you can even see my brother and Sarah in the background of one particularly long scene (pictured on the left)! We also went and saw the whole cast do a live taping of the Nerdist podcast last week and it was awesome. They even screened all of the current season so far beforehand, including that week’s episode that hadn’t been released yet (right hand photo). Such a great group of people, making something for peanuts just because they love it so much. And it’s really all thanks to the power of the internet.

9. Trips to the dog park. It just doesn’t get old! And this week the weather has been perfect in the early evenings. I can’t wait to get my latest roll of film processed, there’s some frames I shot there that I hope came out okay!

10. Hanging out with my auntie. She came into town Sunday (from Hartford) for a conference that finished yesterday, and is staying until next Friday! Can’t wait for our shopping day together. It’s her fault I love purses so much.;)

Happy Friday everybody! What’s making you happy lately?

xoxo
