The Lake

I think I’ve mentioned before that Dante and I love to go for walks down to and around a nearby lake, especially now that it’s light out later! It’s a man-made lake (like most around here), but the city has done a wonderful job with all the landscaping and the wildlife it’s drawn. We’re never alone there – it’s popular as a fishing spot and there’s always people out jogging, walking their dogs or biking.

Lately it seems that Southern California plant life has decided it’s now spring, and the smell of jasmine and orange blossoms is heavenly (my favorite scent, actually), making the walk even more enjoyable. So earlier this week I made sure to bring the camera instead of the iPhone and tried to capture the warm, golden feel that is our evening walk around the lake. I kept it simple and only brought my 50mm lens, but if you’re into wildlife photography this is a great spot for it – besides the usual ducks and geese, we’ve seen swans, cranes and turtles.

{Photographer geek-out moment: after five years of owning the 50mm 1.4 lens, I still get giddy about the gorgeous pinky-red sun flare it creates!}

On the way there and back we take this little trail in between houses, so charming when we see hoofprints from local horses too:

And the fact that my allergies are always riotous by the time we get home? Totally worth it.
