Pearl Anniversary

My parents are celebrating their 30th wedding anniversary today. Thirtieth. 3-0. Apparently, this one is pearl. Who knew?

By now, they should have found the surprise my brothers and I arranged to have waiting for them at their favorite B&B up in Santa Ynez.  :) I’m so glad they decided to treat themselves to a long weekend! It’s rare that they do anything special for themselves these days, and no one deserves it more.

I seriously cannot believe they’ve been together that long. Yes, I know it rationally, but they are so young at heart – grey hairs and all! I love that they still hold hands, crack each other up, snuggle…the whole romantic nine yards.

I’ve told their love story on my old blog, and as a kind of epilogue to that I just have to say how amazing and inspiring it is to bear witness to this next stage in their relationship. The past couple years have brought a lot of challenges and obstacles their way (most of them health related) and no matter how hard they work to keep things “normal”, times they are a-changin’. Things are different, and will never be the same again. And not in a bad way, mind you, just different.

But seeing how they’ve held each other up and taken care of each other on days of poor health is crazy-beautiful. Like I heard somebody say the other day, “It’s easy to love each other when everything is coming up roses. It’s a whole other ball game to love when things get rough. That’s real love. “ It certainly hasn’t been easy, but they’ve grown older together in a way that I know I want to do with my future husband.
