Way back on Mother’s Day weekend, my dad and I surprised my mom with a day trip up to Santa Barbara to go see an Arabian horse show. She was in hog heaven, and it was so fun to watch her soak up all the horse-ness! My grandparents bred Arabians in their retirement, so there’s an extra family tie to these horses. They’re absolutely majestic, to a one. I felt like a kid again – the one who read Black Beauty over and over and went with my mom to the stables.

We spent half the day watching dressage competitions, had a ridiculously delicious lunch at Cold Spring Tavern up in the hills above Santa Barbara (and above the gloomy clouds that never went away), and before leaving town spent some time at Mission Santa Barbara.

{All of these are shot on Ilford XP-2 Super 400 film, with my ever-present Nikon FM and 50mm f/2 lens.}

Some might find it a bit too macabre, but I love walking around old graveyards. And there aren’t as many here in Southern California, so the missions are actually one of the few places to see truly old headstones. Services were going on in the church while we were there, and the music really added an extra layer of…I don’t know, mystique? You definitely felt a bit of a chill at the back of your neck.

It was a long drive home with LA traffic, but milkshakes from In-N-Out helped pass the time.  :)

Such a fantastic day, even if we weren’t prepared for how chilly it would be!

Hope all you Americanos have a wonderful Independence Day, I’ll be back with July’s desktop background on Thursday!
